Before “repairing” the gate installation, I removed the manually provided packages via VS->Tools->Extensions and Updates and added the “Nu Get Package Manager in addition to Packager”. I don’t know if this is really necessary.

Additional important information. My 2012 installation on top of Express for Windows8 worked and runs without issue.
